Die Norm gilt für die Planung und Ausführung von Lüftungs- und Klimaanlagen für Nichtwohngebäude, die für den Aufenthalt von Personen bestimmt sind, mit Ausnahme von Anwendungen bei industriellen Prozessen. Sie definiert die wichtigsten Parameter für diese Systeme und befasst sich nicht mit natürlich belüfteten Gebäuden.
Die Norm zielt darauf ab, eine komfortable und gesunde Umwelt in Gebäuden zu erreichen, indem Lüftungsanlagen mit akzeptablen Betriebskosten eingesetzt werden. Die Norm legt die Leistungen des Filtersystems fest, die in einem Lüftungssystem erforderlich sind, um beginnend mit der Außenluftqualität, eine gute Raumluftqualität (IAQ) zu erzielen. Die Außenluft wird in 3 Stufen eingeteilt, ab ODA 1 bei sauberer Luft, mit Ausnahme von vorübergehender Verschmutzung (z.B. Pollen), bis zu ODA 3 mit hohen Konzentrationen von Gasen und Partikeln in der Luft.
Aufgrund der „Nebenwirkungen“ dieser Stoffe empfiehlt die Weltgesundheitsorganisation (WHO), dass die Konzentrationsgrenzwerte für die folgenden Innenraumschadstoffe nicht überschritten werden sollten:
